A woman once told me my stories will pull you apart and put you back together but never in quite the same way. I should have known I’d become a writer when at age thirteen I began changing the ending to all the books I read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, (very short lived), receptionist in a swanky hair salon, (great cuts, no money), accounts payable clerk, (ugh- not for a right brainer!), and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, (good job, great boss), for me to rediscover writing. It all began at the hands of a 286 computer, a failing marriage, and three daughters under the age of five........

"Skivvy Girl: The Love of a Post WWII Japanese Pleasure Girl" by Earnest Mercer
Author's website:
http://www.earnestmercerbooks.com
This novel tells with seamless authenticity and brutal realism the life of Japan's young post war prostitutes, known as "skivvy girls" in military parlance, and is depicted by the composite protagonist, Matsuyama Yoshiko. Her story begins in a tiny farming community in 1945, when as a seventeen-year-old girl she is stunned by the harsh reality that the death of her father on Iwo Jima has left her and her mother destitute and on the verge of starvation. Yoshiko, a sexually inexperienced virgin, turns to prostitution in the iniquitous naval port city of Yokosuka for survival. She arrives penniless, alone, and with no concept of the callous world of prostitution in which she is about to enter. Taken in by a skivvy house madam, she endures exhaustive training on how to accommodate her clients. When she completes training, she takes her place among the other skivvy house girls. From the
beginning, she suffers brutal treatment from pitiless, often drunken, seamen hungering for sex after long periods at sea. After enduring the demanding life of a prostitute for several months, she is visited by a shy young American sailor who treats her with kindness and respect. They form a bond that eventually morphs into love. Yoshiko leaves the skivvy house to live with her American lover. Together they endure language differences, cultural challenges, and the harshness of the post-war environment, but find solace in their affection for one another. But what does fate hold for these star-crossed lovers?

Joe Flynn is just like any other twelve-year-old his age, except for one thing. Joe has witnessed a murder. The only thing is, no one believes him. Not his mother, and certainly not the detective assigned to the “alleged” case. At least not until dead bodies start popping up.
After thirteen years, Detective Roman MacKenzie has had enough of big city crime in New York and craves the crime-free existence of the small town where he was born. But no sooner than Roman returns to Salmon Lake, PA, he not only finds himself in the middle of a serial murder investigation, but he’s drawn to the woman he left behind all those years ago--Angela Flynn.
Angela’s son is the only witness they have, and it’s Roman’s job to protect him from the killer. Only the detective has no idea that the boy he’s risking his life to save is also his son. Nor does he realize that, looming in the shadows, is the killer and he’s bent on making Angela his next victim.

"The time will come when the Constitution and the Government will hang by a thread and will be ready to fall...but this people, the Latter-Day Saints, will step forth and save it." Thus prophesied the founding prophet of the Mormon Church. Is this prophecy on the verge of being fulfilled? Some adherents to the faith within the U.S. government think so. But what role will 21-year-old missionary Kevin "Red" Davis play when the CIA approaches him? What choices will he make when his faith, his patriotism, and his personal integrity come into conflict? Unfolding on the streets of Vienna, Munich, and Washington, D.C.; and in the confines of a prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, By A Thread is a tale of truth, trust, and betrayal.
